Planning Ahead: Los Angeles Prepares for the 2028 Summer Games

As Los Angeles gets ready to host the 2028 Summer Games, Mayor Karen Bass is already looking at ways to enhance the city’s infrastructure. One of the key areas of focus is public transportation, with a goal of reducing cars on the road to the venues. This initiative will require investments in bus and subway infrastructure, as well as collaboration with neighboring cities to borrow buses. The aim is to make public transportation the preferred mode of travel for attendees, similar to the approach taken during the 1984 Games.

Another significant challenge that Los Angeles is tackling in preparation for the Games is homelessness. Mayor Bass mentioned plans to build more than 18,000 new units for the unhoused population, showing a commitment to addressing this issue before the 2028 Olympics. In addition to infrastructure improvements, the city is also focusing on social issues to ensure that all residents are taken care of during the event.

To alleviate traffic congestion during the Games, discussions are underway with local companies to adjust work schedules and encourage remote work when traffic is high. Additionally, efforts are being made to shift truck deliveries to nighttime hours, similar to what was done during the 1984 Games. By coordinating with businesses and residents, Los Angeles hopes to create a more manageable traffic flow throughout the city and its surrounding areas.

While Los Angeles will not be building new permanent venues for the 2028 Games, organizers are exploring ways to utilize the city’s iconic landmarks as part of the event. LA 2028 President Casey Wasserman noted the success of featuring famous locations like the Eiffel Tower during the Paris Games and is looking for similar opportunities in Los Angeles. One idea discussed was altering the iconic Hollywood Sign to incorporate the Olympic Rings, showcasing the city’s unique blend of entertainment and sports culture.

Actress Jessica Alba, who serves on the Los Angeles 2028 board of directors, highlighted the city’s diverse cultural offerings that will be on display during the Games. From Hollywood to fashion to food, the event will serve as a global platform to showcase the best of what Los Angeles has to offer. With an emphasis on highlighting the city’s unique character, Alba expressed excitement about positioning Los Angeles as a central figure in the Olympic narrative.

As Los Angeles prepares for the 2028 Summer Games, a focus on infrastructure improvements, social issues, citywide coordination, and cultural celebration will be key to the success of the event. By addressing these areas proactively, the city aims to not only host a successful Games but also leave a lasting legacy that benefits residents and visitors alike.
