According to Wong, other social media platforms boast a remarkably high percentage of international users, often around 80% to 90%. In contrast, Reddit’s pool comprises approximately half international users, suggesting a profound untapped market. Wong articulates that with every language comes the potential for forging a new segment of Reddit, which underlines the platform’s commitment to breaking language barriers. Historically dominated by English, Reddit is now venturing into multilingual support, leveraging artificial intelligence for translation. This year marked the introduction of an automatic translation feature, which may soon accommodate 20-30 languages. However, once Reddit captures about 10% of a nation’s internet users, it will initiate localized advertising strategies. This indicates that there’s a sequential approach to monetization that starts with broader strokes before honing in on local brands targeting local clientele.

Despite its efforts to expand, Reddit faces challenges in user navigation that can hinder the overall user experience. Wong acknowledged that visitors often hit a “dead end” when engaging with content and encounter difficulties locating related posts or discussions. To remedy this, Reddit is dedicating resources to enhance its search functionalities, making it easier for users to discover additional content that aligns with their interests. CEO Steve Huffman highlighted the search feature as a critical area of focus for the platform in 2025. Improvements here could significantly enhance user engagement, allowing users to explore content more organically across different communities.

Reddit’s pivot towards international growth, particularly in emerging markets, signifies a change in strategy that could prove worthwhile.
